Daxxify, a new injectable drug to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, has just been approved in the United States. Its interest lies in its longer duration of action than that of Botox. Yes, but is it safer? And will it make it to France?

In the United States, the aesthetic medicine market now has an additional alternative: on September 8, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new injectable drug, Daxxify, a neuromodulator based on peptides.the first of its kind in the US market. Unlike botulinum toxin, its effects would last not 3 months, but 6, without retouching, reducing the number of annual interventions. Side effects would also be less.

What are the differences with Botox?

What does this new type of injection promise? According to Revance Therapeutics, Inc. The company behind it, a clinical trial conducted on 2700 participants and 4200 treatments, reported a satisfactory result in the majority of cases on wrinkles on the forehead and eyebrows (the famous frown lines): Within 4 weeks of injection, 98% of participants no longer showed signs of wrinkle development, and 88% showed clinical improvement in signs of aging. Effects observed over 6 months, while botox injections are to be renewed every 3 months. The company also advertises that unlike other injectables, Daxxify is free of human blood protein (serum albumin) and animal-derived ingredients.

Will Daxxify soon arrive in France?

Asked about this announcement, Dr. Jonathan Haddad, plastic and aesthetic surgeon in Paris, who performs botox injections on a daily basis, does not jump for so much impatience. “Given the consequent and growing demand for injection of Botox and hyaluronic acid, industries are encouraged to find always and even better. It’s no wonder other products are coming to market” he understands. “However, Daxxify, now authorized in the United States, only concerns aesthetic medicine, and not just medicine. While, it should be remembered, botox is certainly used to treat the signs of aging, but also in neurology, to treat migraines, or in urology, to act on bladder contractions”. What the Daxxify does not claim to date.

As for its use in aesthetics, again, the surgeon has reservations: “In Europe, we already have the equivalent of Daxxify, recently. Alluzience, from Galderma laboratories, a ready-to-use injection (botox is generally a powder to be diluted, editor’s note) which, like the Daxxify, promises to last longer. However, what I personally note is that if the effects are there, the injections are much more painful for patients requiring the almost systematic use of anesthetic cream before use.
