Barbaren remains the most brutal German series in season 2

Barbaren Season 1 and Barbaren Season 2 are two long years away. The German history series developed into a small surprise success in 2020. 37 million Netflix households watched the series in the first 4 weeks. The streaming service quickly extended its hit.

From today you can stream the 6 new episodes from Barbaren Season 2 on Netflix. The fact that it took a relatively long time for the second season to be released is due to the complications of the pandemic – but probably also to the production effort of the series. Because similar to the great history role model Vikings, Barbaren attaches great importance to accuracy: costumes, language, weapons, tents, huts – everything has to fit the rough, simulated time (the year 9 AD).

What is Barbarians Season 2 about?

Barbarians – S02 Trailer (German) HD

Season 1 focused on the initiation of the legendary Varus battle in the Teutoburg Forest, which took place during the Augustan Germanic Wars. To put it simply: Germans or barbarians and Romans banged their heads. Showrunners Jan Martin Scharf and Arne Nolting placed the characters Thusnelda (Jeanne Goursaud), Folkwin Wolfspeer (David Schütter) and Arminius (Laurence Rupp) at the center of the plot.

Season 2 begins right after the Varus Battle and works towards the next big, bloody confrontation. Here’s a plot refresher from Netflix:

Why barbarians pay and what no longer works in season 2

Barbarians don’t skimp on unadorned depictions of violence in Season 2 either. If heads are severed, the camera stays on it. It was a hard time back then, men and women died young. The many duels – every 15 minutes it feels like swords or axes crash into each other and into soft body parts – and battles are dirty, bloody and sometimes painful to watch.

Unfortunately, that also applies to them Action that may not really develop in the new episodes. The series doesn’t manage to select a clear opponent from the power turmoil of the Romans. When Thusnelda, “Ari” and the Folkwin forge revolution plans, the pressure and the goal are missing. Their dialogues are full of meaningless empty phrases and liberating platitudes. After the Varus battle, the climax of the story, the air seems to be gone.

A bright spot is the charismatic Murathan Muslu, who embodies the proud Marcomannic ruler Marbod. In addition, the cliffhanger at the end of the season promises an interesting reorientation of the series. So it’s worth persevering!
