The voters have had their say and the right wing has declared itself the winner in the 2022 election. This is now happening in Swedish politics:
Thursday 15 September
Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson (S) formally informs the Speaker of her resignation. She remains, however, to lead a transitional government.
Speaker Andreas Norlén will immediately contact the party leaders to discuss possible government documents.
Norlén is expected to give the assignment to Ulf Kristersson (M), who may probe for a new government.
Intensive negotiations will take place between the parties on the right: M, KD, L and SD. The parties discuss who should form part of a government and policy proposals.
.
Monday 26 September
The Riksdag elects a new Speaker for the mandate period. That’s when it will be decided whether the current Speaker Andreas Norlén can remain in office or not. It can therefore be one speaker who starts the work of bringing about a new government, and another speaker who ends it.
.
Tuesday 27 September
The Riksdag opens. The day marks the start of the new working year in the Riksdag. Ceremony is held with the king. Now, for the first time, the speaker can put forward proposals for a new prime minister.
.
Saturday 1 October
If the Speaker has submitted a prime minister’s proposal during the opening of the Riksdag, a first vote must be held no later than the fourth day after that.
The speaker has four votes to appoint a new prime minister. If the Riksdag has not been able to accept a candidate for prime minister after four votes, a by-election is called.
After the last election in 2018, it took 134 days before a new government was in place, on January 23, 2019.
