Now comes the European Commission’s concrete proposal to solve the crisis with the high energy prices. The measures will dominate Ursula von der Leyen’s big speech on the state of the Union.

At 9 o’clock today, the Commission President will carry out his annual tradition in front of the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. The speech in mid-September each year functions partly as an update on the situation, partly as a kind of government statement about what to expect.

Given the main topic this year is the war in Ukraine and not least its consequences on energy prices. In the speech, von der Leyen is expected to convey the main features of the energy crisis proposals, which will then be formally presented at a press conference this afternoon.

But the Swedish members of parliament also want to hear about other things.

– Personally, I would hope that there will be a little bit about competitiveness and trade, says Tomas Tobé (M), for example, at a press conference.

“I expect to hear three important priorities, about the energy crisis, the climate change and about gender equality. I want to listen to a speech that shows responsibility and political courage in a difficult time. It is time to move from words to action,” says Heléne Fritzon (S) in a press release.

At the same time, there is some concern that measures related to the war, energy and inflation will cause the European Commission to lower the priority of the fight against climate change.

– Climate policy is the first to risk going out the window, laments Emma Wiesner (C).
