Several Swedish stars have left the KHL during the spring and summer.
But what it has cost has been unknown.
But now the exorbitant sum that superstar Joakim Nordström was forced to shell out has been revealed.
More than six months have passed since Russia chose to invade Ukraine and start a war that cost so many lives. A bunch of Swedish players immediately chose to leave the Russian league, but many made completely different decisions at the same time.
Broke the contracts right away
For the coming season, a total of seven Swedes will play in the Russian league this coming season, some have also signed completely new contracts during the time of the war. Last spring, Adam Reideborn and Klas Dahlbeck became champions with CSKA Moscow, which is known as the team of the Russian army, but during the winter the team also included Joakim Nordström and Lucas Wallmark.
Immediately when the war broke out, the Swedish star duo decided to break their contract, and instead look for other clubs in Europe. Both have been clear that it cost a fortune to break their contracts, but that there were no doubts at all. Swedes who have been under contract in Russia have themselves – or with the help of a club that wants to recruit – paid their way out of the contract.
That’s how much it cost
How much it has cost the stars has been unknown, but now comes new information. Joakim Nordström had recently extended his contract with Russia, and now the Swiss newspaper Blick writes that it cost roughly eleven million Swedish kronor for Nordström to break away from the contract.
According to Hockeynews, which refers to Blick, Lucas Wallmark was also forced to pay a similar amount to break his contract. Wallmark has previously said the following to SVT:
– I felt that I did not want to be a part of that. I cannot stand behind what is happening.
– In any case, I will never set foot there again. That much I can say. Now is the time to put your foot down against the war.
