House of the Dragon Episode 4 takes place about a year after Episode 3. It marks the return of Prince Daemon Targaryen to his brother’s Court. Decked out with a crown of the “King of the Straits”, Daemon renews his support for Viserys and offers him his crown, his allegiance, but also the hammer of the Crab Feeder that he defeated in the previous episode. Visibly very happy to find his brother, Viserys welcomes him with pleasure. Daemon also finds Rhaenyra, who still has to look for a husband, and explains to her that marriage is just a political agreement outside of which the two bride and groom can do “whatever they want”.
Daemon also decides to shamelessly his niece and takes her beyond the walls of the Red Keep to enjoy an evening in the streets of Port-Réal. There, she witnesses a street show that shows how the people are not necessarily in favor of her accession to the throne. Daemon then takes her to a brothel where he again explains to her that sex is a pleasure for both man and woman. In the middle of the pleasure house, the uncle and niece begin to kiss and indulge their lasciviousness but Daemon cuts it all short. But the two Targaryens have been seen and their brief antics soon reach Otto Hightower’s ears. Upon her return to the Red Keep, Rhaenyra Targaryen decides to offer her virginity to her protective guardian Criston Cole.
Furious with his brother, Viserys sends Daemon back from the Court to his wife in the Vale, not without hearing Daemon’s desire to take his niece as his wife. Meanwhile, Queen Alicent asks Rhaenyra about it. She wants to know if she can still believe her friend. Rhaenyra promises her on her mother’s memory that Daemon did not touch her. An eye-to-eye lie that Alicent prefers to believe. Viserys, although he has no intention of disinheriting her, announces to her that he no longer intends to wait for her to find her own husband: she will marry Laenor Velaryon, son of Corlys Velaryon who will return, through this alliance, to the ranks. The King brings her a “herbal tea” concocted by the Grand Maester, probably a medieval equivalent of the morning after pill to free her from “any unintended consequence”. One way to make us understand that Viserys doesn’t believe Rhaenyra when she tells him that she didn’t sleep with Daemon…

What to know before watching House of the Dragon
George RR Martin’s universe is as exciting as it is dense. For neophytes as well as for fans who have not read the books, it is not always easy to immerse yourself in a new series in Westeros. To help you make the most of your House of the Dragon viewing, here’s a recap of information you may find useful before watching the new series set in the Game of Thrones universe.
- House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel. The series is set between 200 and 170 years before the events that occur in the first series. It is therefore not necessarily necessary to have seen all eight seasons to watch House of the Dragon.
- The House of the Dragon series adapts a piece from the book Fire and Blood by George RR Martin released in 2018. In this book, Martin writes a historical chronicle dedicated to the Targaryen dynasty.
- House of the Dragon focuses on the period known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, a period of turmoil in Westeros where the Kingdom is split into two camps that support the accession to the throne of two different heirs. At the time, it is Viserys Targaryen first who is on the throne of Westeros. He has no male heir from his first wife but a daughter named Rhaenyra who could succeed him. However, he obtains sons from his second marriage, which disturbs the order of succession and creates the seeds of dissension.
- At the time when House of the Dragon takes place, dragons are alive and well and numerous in Westeros unlike at the beginning of Game of Thrones. Only people of Targaryen blood are able to overpower and ride them. These winged creatures are capable of breathing fire and have been used many times in warfare, which also explains why Targaryen rule is no longer challenged at this point.
- The series covers a period of approximately thirty years. For this, she resorts to regular time jumps and has also recruited several actors to play the same characters at different ages in their lives. From episode 1 to 5, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey play Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. From episode 6, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke take over these roles.
- There are many main characters to remember in House of the Dragon. Here is a brief recap before the start of the season. Viserys Targaryen I (Paddy Considine) is the current King in Westeros. Without a clear successor, he seeks to impose his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as the legitimate heiress. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is the King’s eldest daughter and plans to succeed him. She rides the dragon Syrax and is a friend of the young Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower who exercises the role of Hand of the King (first adviser to the King, the Hand can also endorse his authority. He is the second most powerful man of the Kingdom).
