An unmanned launch vehicle from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space venture crashed shortly after liftoff on Monday.
The rocket’s capsule contained research equipment, but it made it back to Earth intact, according to Blue Origin. The company shows in a video how the capsule’s emergency rockets are triggered about a minute after takeoff from the base in West Texas.
“The capsule landed safely and the launch vehicle touched down within the predetermined risk area. No damage or destruction of public property has been reported,” according to the FAA.
It was the 23rd expedition in The New Shepard rocket program and the first to fail. The accident occurred at an altitude of 8,500 meters.
