Disney has discovered a gold mine for a few years now, namely reissuing its popular animated films for the cinema – as Live-action remakes.

Disney’s 101 Dalmatians: Animated Feature and Live Action Remake
For our list of all Disney Live Action remakes, however, we are using the term remake a little more broadly than usual in order to also cover those films that, as cartoons, “only” represent the real remakes. inspired.

102 Dalmatians (2000) by Kevin Lima, German theatrical release: February 8th, 2001, can be interpreted with a lot of goodwill as a Disney remake of 101 Dalmatians – Part 2, or at least as a sequel to Part 1.
Alice in Wonderland (2010) by Tim Burton, German theatrical release: 03/04/2010, was a loose connection to the original story rather than a direct remake of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (1951).
Maleficent – The Dark Fairy (2014) by Robert Stromberg, German theatrical release: May 29, 2014, was the remake or the reinterpretation from the villain’s point of view of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (1959).
Cinderella (2015) by Kenneth Branagh, German theatrical release: March 12, 2015, relaunched Disney’s Cinderella fairy tale film Cinderella (1950).
The Jungle Book (2016) by Jon Favreau, German cinema release: April 14th, 2016, is the remake of Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967).
Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass (2016) by James Bodin, German theatrical release: May 26, 2016, continued as a sequel to Disney’s live-action reinterpretation.
Eliot the dragon (2016) by David Lowery, German theatrical release: August 25, 2016, appears in this list because the Disney template Elliot, the Smirking Monster (1977) also contained cartoon elements that were adapted here to the live-action film.
Beauty and the Beast (2017) by Bill Condon, German theatrical release: March 16, 2017, is the Disney remake of Beauty and the Beast (1991).
ChristopherRobin (2018) by Marc Forster is not a direct remake, but it clearly ties in with the characters from Winnie the Pooh.
Mary Poppins’ Return (2018) by Rob Marshall can also be counted as a remake or sequel by sophisticated Disney lovers, since Mary Poppins (1964) also contained animated characters.
dumbo (2019) by Tim Burton, German theatrical release: March 28th, 2019, relaunched Disney’s Dumbo, the flying elephant (1941).
Aladdin (2019) by Guy Ritchie, German theatrical release: May 23, 2019, is Disney’s remake of the animated classic Aladdin (1992).
The Lion King by Jon Favreau, German theatrical release: July 17th, 2019, is the lavish remake of Disney’s The Lion King (1994).
maleficent 2 by Joachim Rønning, German theatrical release: October 17th, 2019, continues the Sleeping Beauty remake Maleficent as a Disney sequel.
Susi and the tramp is a live action remake of Disney’s Lady & the Tramp (1955). The film was released in Germany at the start of Disney+ on March 24th, 2020.
mulan is Disney’s expensive remake of their own animated film Mulan (1998). The theatrical release was canceled in the Corona year 2020, so that Mulan first came to Disney+ as a payment option on September 4th, 2020 and was finally activated for all subscription customers on December 4th, 2020.
Cruella As a prequel to 101 Dalmatians, it tells the story of the villain Cruella de Vil in the 1970s with Emma Stone in the leading role. The theatrical release was on May 27th, 2021, one day later the film came to Disney+.
Chip and Dale: The Knights of Justice was not a classic remake of the Disney animated series Chip and Dale (1989) but a meta-sequel that was released on Disney+ on May 20th, 2022.

Upcoming Disney Live Action Remakes
Lilo & Stitch is set to remake the animated version of Lilo and Stitch (2002) into a live-action movie, in which a girl from Hawaii befriends a chaotic alien. Begin: May 2024.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is planned as a Disney new edition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996): The hunchbacked Quasimodo grows up in the Paris church and helps a persecuted woman of the traveling people. Begin: July 2024.
The Sword in the Stone will miss a live action remake of Disney’s version of Arthurian legends, The Witch and the Wizard (1963), directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Planned start is the December 2024.
Tinkerbell will be a spin-off of Peter Pan’s Fairy, starring Reese Witherspoons. Start: in March 2025.
The Jungle Book 2 will create a sequel à la Disney’s The Jungle Book 2 (2003), again directed by Jon Favreau, following the success of Disney’s first live-action remake of Disney’s Jungle Book. Theatrical release is 2026.Future Disney live action remakes in the pipeline
Of course, just because Disney is planning various films doesn’t mean that they will actually be made in the end. That said, we don’t want to deprive you of those Disney live-action films that have been announced in the past, but are not yet in production to be completely certain.
Aladdin 2 will continue the story of Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin with Will Smith’s genie.
cruella 2 is set to bring Emma Stone back as a Dalmatian “lover” once more.
Bambi is one of Disney’s latest remake plans and, as a new edition of Bambi (1942), will probably animate the young fawn in a similarly photorealistic way as the Lion King.
Robin Hood will certainly be an exciting challenge as a Disney live-action movie that has been announced when it animates animals to human actions for the new edition of Robin Hood (1973) for Disney+.
