Since the law was introduced in 1999, the practice for convictions has been 50 day fines, and so far no one has been sentenced to prison for just buying sex. With the tightened legal text, fines have now disappeared from the punishment scale and Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson (S) has previously said that the ambition is for more people to be sentenced to prison.
The fact that the man from Gothenburg received a suspended sentence is due to the fact that he has not previously been convicted of a crime, the district court writes in its judgment.
– The requirement in the legislation is that there must be no reason to assume that he will again be guilty of crime and that is fulfilled by the fact that he has not been punished before, says judge David Longum Caldevik, to the radio.
In addition to the suspended sentence, he must also pay 40 daily fines.
