“extreme” risk on food production by 2045

extreme risk on food production by 2045

According to a study carried out by the risk analysis firm Verisk Maplecroft, the multiplication of heat waves observed in a large part of the world threatens many countries producing agricultural commodities.

The British firm Verisk Maplecroft estimates that by 2045, the agricultural sectors of some sixty countries representing three quarters of world food production could find themselves in a situation of “extreme risk. »

These projections are based on the scenario of global warming of two degrees Celsius, compared to the pre-industrial era. But the “heat stress”which combines temperature levels and the difficulty of working outdoors in certain climatic conditions, has already reached this level of “extreme risk” in twenty countries.

Wheat exports canceled

Among them, China, Brazil, the United States and India. Two years ago, India alone produced 12% of the world’s food production. This year, faced with the losses, the country had to cancel wheat exports in particular.

Among these twenty countries, there are also several major rice producers such as Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.

In projections to 2045, Verisk Maplecroft warns that 9 of the 10 countries most at risk could end up on the African continent. Ghana, the world’s second largest cocoa producer, would be one of them.
