The increase in West Nile Virus cases in Greece caused concern for the Aegean and Marmara Regions. After the news of the West Nile Virus, which caused loss of life in Greece, Prof. Dr. Bahadır Ceylan explained that men and the elderly are in the risk group. While the most common complaints are headache, fever, back and muscle aches and nausea, Prof. Dr. Gazelle, “If you have flu and skin rash, see a doctor immediately” he said.
CAUSED LOSS OF LIFE IN GREECE
News of the West Nile Virus, which led to loss of life in Greece, increased concerns about mosquito-borne epidemics.
Commenting on the statement, Prof. Dr. Ceylan gave information about the West Nile Virus, which was seen in 123 cases within 24 hours in Greece and resulted in 11 deaths.
CAUSED CONCERNS FOR THE AEGEAN AND MARMARA
While the rapid increase in the number of cases in Greece caused concern especially for the Aegean and Marmara Regions, Prof. Dr. Bahadır Ceylan drew attention to the summer and autumn months in West Nile Virus.
Stating that precautions should be taken against mosquito bites especially in summer and autumn seasons in order to protect against WNV, for which there is no vaccine yet, Ceylan said, “Mosquitoes multiply rapidly, especially in wet and humid areas. It is extremely important to dry stagnant and polluted water bodies in the living area and to spray the environment.” gave warnings.
PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE AT HOME
prof. Dr. Bahadır Ceylan gave the following information about the precautions to be taken at home:
“Mosquitoes come with puddles, food waste, fruit and vegetables in waste buckets and containers, especially in homes. They breed in unused garden and ornamental pools, house plants, and water puddles in pots under pots. Spray your plants and flowers in the house, make sure the water containers are clean. Mosquito nets should be installed, there should be no gaps under the doors. Especially in humid environments such as bathrooms and kitchens, the use of mosquito nets and environmental hygiene keep mosquitoes away to a great extent. Apart from this, areas such as chimneys, ventilation pipes and heating boilers should be cleaned. Pay attention to cracks in areas such as balconies and window sills. “A mosquito that lands on your clothes outside can easily enter the house with you. Use a mosquito net, and when you go out at night, choose long-sleeved clothes that cover the legs.”
“ELDERLY AND MEN AT RISK”
Explaining that the most feared complication of WNV is the development of infection in the brain, Ceylan said, “This situation can develop in one in 150 of the people infected with the virus, the result is fatal for 10 percent of these cases. The risk group is especially the elderly, cancer patients, organ transplant patients and men. In cases with brain involvement, nonsensical speech, drowsiness, coma, contractions in the arms, Parkinson’s disease-like symptoms and paralysis can be seen. WNV is seen in Turkey, 75 percent of the people infected with the virus do not develop any complaints. Only one quarter of the cases develop the disease The most common complaints in those who develop the disease are headache, fever, back and muscle aches and nausea.” gave the information.
IF YOU HAVE THIS SYMPTOM, CONSULT A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY
Stating that there may be sore throat, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea among the complaints, Prof. Dr. Ceylan said:
“In 25-50 percent of the cases, measles-like red rashes may also develop. These complaints are similar to those in very common infections such as influenza, diarrhea and upper respiratory tract infections. In patients who develop flu-like complaints during the hot season, especially if there is a skin rash, West Nile Encephalitis virus infection should come to mind and a doctor should be consulted urgently before the general health picture changes.
