Only profits for just over a year.
Then came the shock for Armand Duplantis.
After the unexpected loss in the Diamond League, “Mondo” admits:
– I needed that.
Armand Duplanits had won 20(!) straight races and it often felt like there was hardly any challenger. But in this weekend’s Diamond League competition, father Greg or mother Helena were awake.
First loss in a year
If that was why the loss came, of course, it cannot be determined, but it is clear that it was a shocked Duplantis who had to see himself defeated. Ernest John Obiena, from the Philippines, jumped 5.91 in his final attempt – while Mondo had three rips.
Duplantis was angry afterwards, throwing the rods angrily into his case, but was humbly honest afterwards. He suggested that it may have been signs that he is getting tired after his intense matchmaking. However, Duplantis was no more depressed than that he went to Finland to follow the Finnkampen.
– Finnkampen is always Finnkampen. It’s always fun. I would have liked to compete, but my schedule was too tight, says Duplantis to the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat.
The words about the future
Duplantis was also, of course, asked about his unexpected defeat in Brussels. He then had a day or so to digest it all.
– Not my best competition. Maybe I went into the competition a little too relaxed. I felt in advance that there was nothing that could go wrong, he says.
But Duplantis does not break down. His first loss of the season may have been a valuable one. He believes it was exactly what he needed.
– It was perhaps good to have a little awakening. Honestly, I think I needed it.
