What to know before watching House of the Dragon
George RR Martin’s universe is as exciting as it is dense. For neophytes as well as for fans who have not read the books, it is not always easy to immerse yourself in a new series in Westeros. To help you make the most of your House of the Dragon viewing, here’s a recap of information you may find useful before watching the new series set in the Game of Thrones universe.
- House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel. The series is set between 200 and 170 years before the events that occur in the first series. It is therefore not necessarily necessary to have seen all eight seasons to watch House of the Dragon.
- The House of the Dragon series adapts a piece from the book Fire and Blood by George RR Martin released in 2018. In this book, Martin writes a historical chronicle dedicated to the Targaryen dynasty.
- House of the Dragon focuses on the period known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, a period of turmoil in Westeros where the Kingdom is split into two camps that support the accession to the throne of two different heirs. At the time, it is Viserys Targaryen first who is on the throne of Westeros. He has no male heir from his first wife but a daughter named Rhaenyra who could succeed him. However, he obtains sons from his second marriage, which disturbs the order of succession and creates the seeds of dissension.
- At the time when House of the Dragon takes place, dragons are alive and well and numerous in Westeros unlike at the beginning of Game of Thrones. Only people of Targaryen blood are able to overpower and ride them. These winged creatures are capable of breathing fire and have been used many times in warfare, which also explains why Targaryen rule is no longer challenged at this point.
- The series covers a period of approximately thirty years. For this, she resorts to regular time jumps and has also recruited several actors to play the same characters at different ages in their lives. From episode 1 to 5, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey play Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. From episode 6, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke take over these roles.
- There are many main characters to remember in House of the Dragon. Here is a brief recap before the start of the season. Viserys Targaryen I (Paddy Considine) is the current King in Westeros. Without a clear successor, he seeks to impose his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as the legitimate heiress. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is the King’s eldest daughter and plans to succeed him. She rides the dragon Syrax and is a friend of the young Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower who exercises the role of Hand of the King (first adviser to the King, the Hand can also endorse his authority. He is the second most powerful man of the Kingdom).
