    The beginning of June 2021 was marked by numerous market recalls of several references of ice cream brands. In question: the presence of too high a level of ethylene oxide.

    Used for its antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, ethylene oxide gas is a substance classified as a “carcinogenic and mutagenic substance” by the European Union since 2011 and must not contain more than 0.05 milligrams of oxide of ethylene per kilo. In September 2020, the European Food Safety Monitoring Network (RASFF) warned about this largely exceeded threshold for certain sesame seeds imported from India. Since then, many food products containing these seeds have been recalled from the market.

    Today, it seems that ice creams are also impacted by this increased vigilance about the excessive ethylene oxide threshold because since the beginning of June, many products have been recalled from the market.
