Christian Bale was initially laughed at for coming up with Nolan’s Batman trilogy

Speaking to the Washington Post about his villain role in Thor 4: Love and Thunder, Bale also opened up about how he at that time still ridiculed for the concept of Nolan’s Batman films became:

I would [den Leuten sagen], we’re going to do Batman but take him seriously. I’ve had countless people laugh at me and just say, ‘Well, this will not work at all.‘ So it’s wonderful to be part of a trilogy that proved these people wrong.

After Tim Burton’s Batman films with Michael Keaton, which portrayed the DC hero in a very somber way, the character slipped into the ridiculous. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin by Joel Schumacher were at most as trash orgies ironically enjoyable. Otherwise, Batman was only degraded to a joke figure here.

The thought that subsequent Batman films would go down a completely serious path again was unimaginable to many at the time. But Nolan’s trilogy silenced most dissenting voices and put it down Foundation for the somberly serious tonewhich would go on to shape the general DC film universe.
