Rents in the free sector rose the fastest, at 3.8 percent. Residents of social housing pay an average of 2.8 percent more. But what do tenants pay? According to Marcel Trip, spokesperson at the Woonbond, it is difficult to give an average. “But if you look at homes that are newly rented out, the price in the free sector is 17 euros per square meter. That is simply very high.” Landlords seize the moment that homes become available and are rented out again to raise rents. “In the free sector there is no brake on the rent. If they can get it, they will ask for it. And people will pay it anyway, because ten others for you. Rather live expensive than not live.”
