In Germany, the lights were turned off between 22:00 and 06:00, within the framework of the decision taken by the federal government to save energy.

According to the decision, the lights of public buildings, statues, monuments and signboards will be turned off from 22:00 local time.

With these measures, which have been implemented and will be valid for 6 months, the government aims to reduce gas use by 2 percent.

In the city center of Cologne, after 22:00 local time, besides the signboards and the lighting of public buildings, the lights projected on the buildings for aesthetic purposes and the lights of the shop windows were turned off, while only the street lamps were left on.

With a decision taken by the Cologne Municipality, the lighting of the historical Cologne cathedral was turned off as of August 9th.
