Chamber plays on the screen are a daring decision. When shooting, the effort is minimized, but the same location over and over again can bore many viewers in 90 minutes. 7500 is a shining counterexample. The gripping thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) plays 93 minutes only in one cockpit. And will with its sweaty dramaturgy cause nausea in some viewers.
On TV: 7500 is a gripping airplane thriller full of gruesome decisions
Patrick Vollrath’s feature film debut revolves around the pilot Tobias (Gordon-Levitt), whose passenger plane is hijacked by Islamic terrorists shortly after take-off. He manages to lock himself in the pulpit. However, his co-pilot is seriously injured. And Tobias’ wife, who works as a flight attendant on board, is also in the grip of the attackers.
Vollrath skillfully uses the Kammerspiel premise. For example, he expands the scene via the surveillance screens on which brutal scenes are played out. When Levitt’s character has to make gruesome decisions in response and life for a few is up against life for all, the film’s world shrinks again. In the claustrophobia of the cockpit Tobias’ panic can be felt between the cold flashing indicator lights.
Vollrath’s captivating staging and Gordon-Levitt’s acting was also well-received by many critics (via Rotten Tomatoes). “Tight, exciting and elegant“, according to Empire Magazine.
