The European Medicines Agency EMA has decided to recommend approval for two new updated vaccines from Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna, which should provide better protection against the omicron virus variant.
– We expect a decision from the EU Commission shortly, says Charlotta Bergquist, vaccine coordinator at the Swedish Medicines Agency at a press conference.
Both vaccines are mRNA vaccines and are approved as top-up vaccines for people from the age of 12, according to the Swedish Medicines Agency.
Sweden has been waiting for information about getting access to the variant-adapted vaccines that should provide protection against both the omicron subvariant BA.1 and the original virus, sars-cov-2. The current vaccines do not have as good protection against new variants of omicrons.
