Many sci-fi fabrics depict intergalactic wars as a stage for bravery and feats of glory. In Dune, a spoiled nobleman becomes a proud warrior. Luke Skywalker matures into a lightsaber virtuoso in various duels and the heroes of many Star Wars series do the same. Ender’s Game – The Big Game on Netflix, however, makes such heroic myths a trap for the viewer: to delightfully beautiful battles here is a revealing, cruel twist.
Enders Game intoxicates on TV with stylish sci-fi battles
But first of all, the blockbuster by director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is completely devoted to the spectacle of the sci-fi war: After a devastating alien attack on Earth, the remaining world military is arming itself with an unusual training program for one renewed attack: Rigorous drill and non-stop training simulations are to find the new lead admiral of Earthfleet among child recruits.
Ender (Asa Butterfield) turns out to be the most gifted of them all. His superior Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) then sends him through increasingly demanding simulations designed to test his tactical and strategic skills. That’s how the teenager gets his first real battle against the aliens getting closer.

The staging of the simulations is incredibly gripping and visually impressive: the film delivers at breakneck speed mind-boggling twists and slick sci-fi skirmishes, reminiscent of films like Tron: Legacy with their futuristic armor and neon light aesthetic. But that is ultimately a perfidious trick.
The beautiful sci-fi battles are followed by a brutal twist
Because the rapid speed, the noble look and the staging of Ender’s brilliant ideas always make me as a spectator lust for more: That here a child raised for war service by cold-blooded adults becomes, recedes into the background.

Ender and Colonel Graff
Even if Graff’s ideology and Ender’s innocence always be briefly questioned: the fun in the increasingly crazy sci-fi shootouts outweighs the bad.
Then suddenly the emergency is just around the corner and Ender has to put the best of his drilled skills to the test. The twist that follows should turn the stomachs of many viewers.
It won’t be revealed here either, because it’s essential for the effect of the film. The twist comments on the film’s action scenes in a way that some fans might feel betrayed: what he enjoyed for 114 minutes, suddenly becomes an abomination.

Ender is supposed to avert another alien attack
Other will consider the sci-fi hit to be a lie. I personally enjoy the twist: I still enjoy sci-fi battles as much as many others. But shiny, supposedly fictional surfaces often have a devastating effect on critical thinking. And it’s good when fiction occasionally lets us see that.
