Two young men were convicted in the district court for a murder in Gävle. Now the Court of Appeal has set the men free pending a verdict, local media reports.

– The Court of Appeal’s decision means in practice that they will be acquitted, says prosecutor Therese Stensson Jonsson to Gefle Dagblad.

In November last year, a 27-year-old man was shot to death in central Gävle. Witnesses have told how they saw the victim being chased by two people before the shooting.

According to the prosecutor, the background to the murder was a conflict between two criminal networks in the city.

Two 20-year-old men were charged with the murder and in June they were sentenced to twelve and fourteen years in prison respectively by the district court.

The sentence was appealed and after the trial in the Court of Appeal ended on Tuesday, the men were released. The Court of Appeal’s verdict will come on September 16.
