Mikhail Gorbachev will be buried on Saturday. This is stated by Russian media with reference to his daughter Irina and a foundation he set up.
The funeral ceremony will take place in the historic Hall of Columns in Moscow, the Russian news agency Interfax reports.
He will then be buried at the Novodevichy cemetery next to the Moscow River. The cemetery is located next to the monastery of the same name, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is uncertain which heads of state and government will attend the ceremony.
Many leaders in countries that support Russia’s policies under President Vladimir Putin have previously been hesitant to pay tribute to former leader Gorbachev, while Western leaders reportedly boycott trips to Moscow even if they want to honor Nobel laureate Gorbachev’s legacy.
Word on whether Gorbachev will receive a state funeral, and whether President Vladimir Putin will attend, has not yet been released from the Kremlin.
