A Marvel stars 163 million sci fi blockbuster that flopped terribly

Many a bizarre premise turns out to be a huge hit in the cinema. Cowboys & Aliens is not such a case. The wild mix of western setting and sci-fi story by Marvel star Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: No Way Home) failed with resounding criticism and at the box office. And that after 14 years of development.

“Laughable” and “stupid”: Marvel star’s sci-fi cracker becomes a bad flop

The story on paper will grab many genre lovers. A desperado with amnesia (Daniel Craig) is about to take on a nefarious cattle baron (Harrison Ford) when they are attacked by aliens. As the aliens kidnap innocent villagers, the two reluctantly work together.

The 2011 film has been in the works since 1997, according to a Variety report. All the effort didn’t help much in the end. The performance of Craig and Ford in particular was well received by the critics. Screenplay flaws and unimaginative staging weighed much heavier there (via Metacritic ), some authors even called the film “laughable” and “stupid” (via Slant Magazine).

Audiences seemed to heed critical judgment, punishing the film with a worldwide gross of $178 million (via Box Office Mojo). With a budget of 163 million, it’s an immense loss.
