Russian volunteer battalions are on their way to the front in Ukraine, assesses the ISW think tank. They can assist in an offensive against the city of Donetsk or reinforce in the south.

According to image analysis by the intelligence group Jane’s Intelligence Group, unlike other volunteer groups, they appear to have been trained with more modern equipment.

“Better equipment does not necessarily lead to more effective forces when personnel are not well trained or disciplined,” writes ISW.
