Rasmus Kupari pulls on his cleats and steps onto the familiar ice of the Kotka ice hall. Here, a young NHL player has launched the first pucks of his life into the goal.

– I was six years old when I went to ice hockey school. This is where everything started from the competition hall and the adjacent training hall, Kupari says.

Kupari has spent the summer in his hometown Kotka. The summer has passed in preparation for the NHL season that starts at the beginning of October.

– I’ve been to the weight room and done speed training. Now at the end of the summer, I’ve been enjoying myself at the ice rinks and increasing my ice training.

The copper leaves for the United States in two weeks. His team, the Los Angeles Kings, organizes a training camp to find out who will make the actual team.

– A large group of players participates in the camp, and then little by little the players drop out. The team and a couple of extras remain. The camp includes training games, exercises and going through the game system.

Kupari is not excited about the upcoming training camp. Previous camps have brought certainty.

– I already have a few training camps under my belt, so I know what’s to come. The summer training has gone well and I am ready to take the next steps.

Golf to support hockey

In the fall, Kupari will have his third season in the NHL and in the ranks of the Los Angeles Kings. The first seasons he played mainly in the farm team. Last season, however, he played closer to 60 NHL games and scored five goals and eight assists.

– It’s a great result for the first proper season. I still want more. I have done a lot of work during the summer so that next season I can get even more power and goals.

Kupari’s current goal is to join the Los Angeles Kings NHL team. In the team, he wants to achieve an even bigger role in the games and help the team win.

– I dreamed of winning the Stanley Cup. Of course, I also have dreams about the national team. It would be nice to be able to hold the men’s WC shirt and get gold from the WC and the Olympics.

In addition to traditional training, Kupari has been preparing for the upcoming NHL season by playing golf. Golf provides him with a good counterweight to ice hockey, but it also develops the skills needed in ice hockey.

– In golf, you have to get your nerves under control, and that’s certainly a good thing when you think about it. Even golf deals with missed shots.

The plans for the last two weeks before leaving for the United States are clear at Kupari.

– I go to play a few rounds of golf, hang out with loved ones and family, and still do some training on the ice. I’m trying to enjoy the last summer weather in Kotka.
