First Lord of the Rings reactions promise an experience like

Is the new series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power worth it? After all, Amazon is pumping millions into the major project that is to become the flagship of the streaming service. From September 2nd we’ll be able to form our own opinion, but until then we’ll have to be content with the opinions of others. Starting with the Social media reactions to the first two episodes. As always, the following applies here: Premiere reactions tend to be more positive than later reviews.

What is the new Lord of the Rings series about: The Short Version

The trailers for the fantasy series based on JRR Tolkien tend to confuse rather than clarify the plot, but one thing is certain: The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age. After defeating the great villain Melkor, elves and humans think they are safe. Only Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) believes that a dark menace prepares the return: Sauron. Famous events in and around Middle-earth are covered throughout the series, including the forging of the Rings of Power and the fall of the human kingdom of Númenor.

The first reactions to the series: entertainment like Peter Jackson and really big pictures

The series “takes a bit to get started”but Decider’s Alex Zalben saw two “staggeringly fantastic” episodes with one “nice score”. The series also transport fans of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy back to Middle-earthespecially once the dwarves enter.

Lauren Sarner of the New York Post was skeptical, however “was pleasantly surprised. […] Pictures and sound are spot on, in my opinion great new addition to Tolkien’s world.

Cosmopolitan’s Tamara Fuentes gives an interesting perspective for those who don’t have much Lord of the Rings knowledge:

I’ve never seen a Lord of the Rings movie and I’m completely confused, which is a bit problematic because it’s a prequel. […] The pacing is quite slow and the episodes are long. I don’t think someone jumping into the story just now will stick with it. But if you’re curious or a LotR fan, then this is for you.

As for the story, the tweets have been vague so far. Syfy’s Trent Moore writes:

The massive budget oozes out of every scene and it feels like something that could sit right next to Jackson’s films. But even though it’s such a huge world Overwhelmed [die Serie] not and keeps her focus.

Critic Edward Douglas notes that the pilot is good, but episode 2let the fans freak out” becomes.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres September 2 on Amazon Prime Video* with the first two episodes of Season 1.
