How does the Champions League draw work?
As perfectly explained by official site of the Champions League, here is how the draw works:
- The draw includes 32 teams: 26 teams qualifying directly for the group stage and the six winners of the play-offs.
- The teams are divided into four groups. Pot 1 is made up of the titleholders, UEFA Europa League winners and champions of the six top-ranked nations. Pots 2 to 4 are determined by the classification by coefficient of the clubs.
- In the case of associations with two representatives, the clubs are paired in order to distribute their matches between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In the case of associations with four representatives, two pairs will be formed. These pairings will be based on television ratings.
- No team may play against a team from its own association. Any other restrictions will be announced prior to the draw.
