Robin Figren has ended his career.
But there was no lack of interest in the profile.
Now he reveals which team he snubbed – and the interest from the SHL.
Robin Figren became a huge profile in the SHL during his years in the league. After playing in Frölunda and HV71, among others, the forward chose to leave Swedish hockey to play in Switzerland, and in Kloten it was a smash hit.
Finished career
Figren has described the years in Switzerland as some of the best of his entire career, and it all had to end with him having to postpone his Kloten in the top league. But after that, Figren’s contract expired, and everyone has been wondering where he will go next.
But last week came the unexpected announcement that he chooses to end his career, after a full 17 years as a professional.
– Until today, hockey has given me everything. It has given me experiences that many others only dream of. At the same time, it has taught me to be a good friend and how to stand up for the guy next door, he said in the podcast Släpp Sargen, where he gave a celebrated “Summer talk” about his life in ice hockey.
– I will miss being able to have a coffee, a snuff, sit and talk shit and gossip with my teammates in the locker room. Having said that, today I have chosen to end my career as a hockey player, he continued.
Nobbed SHL team
But after all, there has not been a lack of interest in “Figge”. In this week’s episode of the podcast, he reveals, among other things, that during the summer he snagged an unexpected team in the form of the Northern Irish(!) Belfast Giants, who, among other things, meet Skellefteå in the CHL in the fall. The club got in touch with Figren on Instagram, but there was nothing appealing, he says with all clarity in the podcast.
But there was not only interest abroad. The figures reveal that there was concrete interest from a middle club in the Hockeyallsvenskan, and also from an unnamed SHL club.
However, Robin Figren refused, mainly on the grounds that he is not keen on “a crowded bus trip to Luleå in the middle of February, on a Saturday, with a greasy pasta box with medium-rare chicken, with 25 other men who fart and shout sex words”.
He then says, with a little more seriousness:
– It would have been a fun role in this SHL team, but since I feel pretty ready, I was pretty sure anyway.
