One of the best films of recent years that far

Netflix sorts out some titles at the end of the month. We would like to recommend one of these films to you in particular, because it inspired us greatly when it opened in cinemas in 2019: Beale Street by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins.

Disappear on Netflix: That’s what Beale Street is all about

The love drama actually comes from 2018. In Germany, however, the film only hit the cinemas a year later. The wait was definitely worth it: After Moonlight, Jenkins delivered another one gripping story about love and identity. In 2020, Beale Street was offered by Netflix. However, on August 31 of this year, he disappears from the program.

  • The film is based on James Baldwin’s novel Beale Street Blueswhich in the original has the even more poetic title If Beale Street Could Talk carries. Here you can buy the German translation * on Amazon. And here you can find the original version *.
  • The story takes you to New York in the 1970s. In fact, we find ourselves in Harlem, where 19-year-old saleswoman Tish (KiKi Layne) is strolling around with her boyfriend Fonny (Stephan James). It’s a dreamlike moment, but then it will the happy couple separated.

Fonny is accused of raping a woman. Although he has an alibi that excludes him as a perpetrator, he goes to jail. Tish pulls out all the stops to get Fonny out of there. Last but not least, she is pregnant and does not want her child to grow up without his father.

Beale Street creates anger, love and passion

In Beale Street, Barry Jenkins beautifully captures the grand emotion of Baldwin’s novel and adds a touch of flair to the story amazing cinematic languagestarting with the intense colors and smooth camera movements to the music by Nicholas Britell, who already added a very special level to Moonlight.

Few films are staged as carefully as Beale Street. At the same time, Jenkins brings a sense of the incredible injustice with what happens to Fonny without him being able to defend himself. Beale Street is a film full of passion and love, but despair and anger can also be found between the breathtaking images.

The cast is also really strong. Not only do KiKi Layne and Stephen James shine as lovers who have been torn apart. Down to the smallest supporting role the film has an excellent cast. Colman Domingo, Regina King and Teyonah Parris, who is currently causing a stir in WandaVision: I particularly remember the tragic appearance of Atlanta star Brian Tyree Henry.
