At the age of 17, Pi (Suraj Sharma) is about to emigrate from India to Canada with his family. Also on board the ship are most of his family’s zoo animals to be sold in America. After a heavy storm, only Pi made it onto a lifeboat with some animals. That starts a struggle for survival lasting more than 200 days.
Life of Pi goes to the heart of Netflix – and overwhelms with incredible pictures
When Ang Lee’s film hit theaters in 2012, it was 3D hype still pretty fresh after James Cameron’s Avatar. In addition to the many films that were subsequently converted to 3D and tended to hurt the eyes, Life of Pi benefited greatly from the effect and made the cinematic experience even more impressive.
But even on Netflix, where the film’s 3D effect is lost, Ang Lee’s blockbuster remains an impressive spectacle. The award at the Oscars 2013 for Best Visual Effects is especially noticeable in the scenes where the main character interacts with the animated animals or encounters the wonders of nature.

The portrayal of the tiger Richard Parker is unique and looks so real in almost every scene, as if a real animal had actually been shot here. Scenes in which the lifeboat is suddenly stormed by a school of flying fish, a glowing whale or a floating island full of meerkats also make Life of Pi optical delight.
With his film, however, Ang Lee did not simply create a demonstration of impressive technical possibilities. Also narratively, Life of Pi is a extremely touching drama, in which the main character’s struggle for survival is elevated to a modern fairy tale. Without going overboard religiously, the blockbuster is also about how the power of faith can create the most unbelievable stories.
