A serious bug decides an important professional game – despite a 42-minute break, Riot does nothing

A major playoff game in League of Legends took place in South Korea on August 18. KT Rolster played against former world champions Damwon Kia. Match 2 was actually evenly matched until a serious bug put DWG Kia on the winning track. Esports fans in South Korea are now criticizing a decision by Riot Games.

What was that match? The playoffs have begun in League of Legends: It will be decided who will be champion in the regions and who will go to the worlds.

In the Korean leagues, two strong teams met in the quarterfinals on August 18:

  • DAMWON Gaming (who have sold their name to KIA) are the reigning runners-up. In 2020 they even won the Worlds. The team has two of the best players in the world in Showmaker and Canyon in the mid lane and in the jungle. This year, top laner Nuguri is back, although he has since lost his regular spot. They finished fourth in the league.
  • They met the fifth of the LCK; KT Rolster, who have been just behind the top teams in South Korea such as T1, Gen G: and Damwon KIA for a number of years.

What was that bug? The bug emerged about 30 minutes into Match 2 of the Best of Three competition. KT Rolster released a statement, translated by esports journalist Ashley Kang (via twitter):

We would like to make a statement about the break in Game 2:

The pause was requested when the ADC Aiming bought and then returned a stopwatch on Kalista, causing the Ornn upgrade on Immortal Shieldbow to reset.

So a completely bizarre bug, but which put KT Rolster at a considerable disadvantage:

  • Top laner Orrn had boosted an ADC Kallista item with his special skill
  • Kallista bought a stopwatch and returned it
  • This removed the Ornn upgrade on the other item
  • This put the team at a disadvantage.

Ornn also stars in this bombastic LoL video:

A bombastic League of Legends video has now garnered 138 million views – showing just how huge LoL is

How did Riot Games decide? Riot Games investigated the incident during a 42-minute hiatus, but then decided not to chronobreak the game because the incident “wasn’t previously detected.”

Team disadvantaged by the bug lost the game and eventually the series

That’s how it went: The game, which was balanced before, was won by DWG Kia.

DWG KIA took a 2-0 lead in the series, but KT Rolster came back up to 2-2 and a reverse sweep was in the air. But once again KT Rolster proved to be unlucky.

DWG KIA was able to win with a “backdoor”.

That’s it: DWG KIA is in the base of the opponent at the decisive moment when KT Rolster is just distracted.

In the end they even won the tight series 3-2. This eliminated KT Rolster from the playoffs.

What else did you notice? As noted by former Korean pro Wolf commentating on the game in Korea, there was a second bug in the same game. The bug allowed KT Rolster’s ADC to use his flash despite being enchanted by Ahri.

This is the discussion: Many esports fans are upset with Riot Games’ decision in Korea. In their opinion, this was a bug affecting the game: a game reset would have been appropriate here.
