VENISSIEUX. After a refusal to comply, the police opened fire in Vénissieux on the night of Thursday to Friday. The shot hit and seriously injured the driver of the vehicle while the passenger succumbed to his injuries. Two investigations are open.
An individual died and another was seriously injured by police fire, in Vénissieux in the metropolis of Lyon, on the night of Thursday to Friday. The police opened fire after a vehicle refused to comply to check the car reported stolen. The facts occurred around midnight in a supermarket parking lot according to details given by a police source to BFM TV. According to the account of the facts, the driver of the vehicle started and drove towards one of the four police officers. The law enforcement officer used his weapon before being struck and thrown onto the bonnet of the car and then to the ground. Another officer then fired at the vehicle, hitting and wounding the 26-year-old driver in the head. The passenger, a 20-year-old man, was also hit and succumbed to his injuries despite the rapid intervention of the emergency services. The policeman with minor leg injuries was taken to hospital.
Two police investigations have been opened. The first for violence against a person holding public authority relates to the driver of the vehicle while the second was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), the police force. As every time a police officer uses his weapon, the institution is asked to carry out the investigations. The two police officers who fired are currently in custody.
