The long jump final in Munich offered quite a bit of drama.
Thobias Montler took a bronze – but which then became a silver after Swedish protest.
– Right must be right, says coach Yannick Tregaro.
There was great drama that unfolded during the athletics EC in Germany on Tuesday evening. The Swede Thobias Montler surprisingly took a bronze, but which then became a silver after an opponent had a jump deleted.
Filed protest
Great Britain’s Jacob Fincham-Dukes jumped 8.06 in his first jump. It was a distance that Thobias Montler matched in his last attempt and finished in third place. This after Fincham-Duke’s second jump was longer than the Swede’s.
The Swede was lyrical about his bronze and then he did not know that it would later be upgraded to a silver. From the TV couches, friends of the Swedish coach Yannick Tregaro had sent pictures of Fincham-Duke’s silver jump.
It showed a clear overstep, which the coach then showed to the judges.
“I am very happy”
– Friends from home sent videos of Fincham-Duke’s first jump, 8.06, it’s pretty clear that it’s overstepped. Right should be right. But we’ll see what the judges say, it could be a silver instead, says Tregaro to SVT Sport.
It all resulted in Fincham-Duke’s hopes being canceled and the silver instead going to Thobias Montler.
– From a bronze medal to a silver is a step up and it feels even better. Today it was impossible to threaten Tentoglou, so silver was the best I could get today, I’m very happy, he says.
The Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou was superior and secured the gold with a jump of 8.52 meters, which means a new EC record.
