Violent protests erupted in Kenya after the Electoral Commission declared Deputy President William Ruto the winner of the presidential election, a result rejected by several of the commission’s representatives.
The announcement sparked street protests in the capital, Nairobi, as well as in the city of Kisumu, where opposition leader Raila Odinga has strong support. Protesters set fire to car tires and threw stones at the police, who used tear gas to disperse the protests.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga rejects the results of Kenya’s presidential election, calling it “a flagrant disregard” of the country’s constitution. Odinga is supported by four of the election commission members who claim that the number of votes counted is not correct.
