But panicked customers pushed open the department store’s door in a struggle with department store guards and fled to avoid quarantine.

China, with its 1.4 billion inhabitants, continues its Covid-19 zero-tolerance strategy.

During Saturday, the authorities in the big city of Shanghai announced that a corona case could be traced to an Ikea department store in the city, whereupon the entire store closed down – with the customers inside.

Videos of desperate shoppers trying to get out of the department store are circulating on social media. They have a tough fight against the guards on the other side of the door who are trying to shut the customers inside.

The shoppers finally manage to push the door open, after which most are able to get past the guards and run away.

Six cases – 25 million inhabitants

At a press conference on Sunday, Zhao Dandan, the deputy director of Shanghai’s Ministry of Health, spoke about the incident.

He said that anyone caught in the department store’s lockdown needs to undergo a two-day quarantine in the authorities’ premises, and then a five-day “health monitoring”.

According to CNN The department store will reopen on Tuesday, after being closed for two days according to the authorities’ guidelines.

During Monday, the authorities in Shanghai reported six new cases of corona, of which five showed no symptoms.

Earlier this year, the entire city was in lockdown for two months, leading to great discontent among the 25 million population.
