On September 13, the Davis Cup group stage starts. There, Sweden, with Elias and Mikael Ymer among others in the team, will face Argentina, Italy and Croatia in a tough group.
The Spanish squad had a really heavy break today. World number three Rafael Nadal has turned down the tournament which he won in 2019 – also the last time the star played.
Nadal had to throw in the towel for his match against Australian Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon semi-finals earlier in July due to stomach problems. Nadal has planned to play the US Open later in August and the Davis Cup may then come too close afterwards.
Instead, Spain have to rely on rising star Carlos Alcaraz to lead them.
Novak Djokovic will line up for Serbia in what could be his first match since winning Wimbledon. The US’s covid-19 regulations put an end to the Serb who is not allowed to enter the country as he is unvaccinated.
World number two Alexander Zverev, Germany, has previously announced that he will one hundred percent play the Davis Cup. Zverev has not played since his horror injury at the French Championships where he badly hurt his foot.
Former grand slam winner Andy Murray will play for Great Britain but in-form Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios will not play for Australia.
