A group of American politicians visiting Taiwan met President Tsai Ing-Wen on Monday. At the same time, China announces that it is starting new military exercises around the island.
The meeting takes place less than two weeks after the high-profile visit to Taiwan by the US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi’s visit drew strong reactions from China, which has carried out several threatening military exercises around the de facto self-governing island, which Beijing views as its own. Now China announces that exercises have resumed today.
