Author Salman Rushdie was assaulted on stage in Chautauqua, northwest of New York, on Friday.
According to the AP news agency, a man ran onto the stage from where Rushdie was giving a lecture, and either punched or stabbed the writer.
75-year-old Rushdie fell to the ground and was attended to by staff. The extent of the damage is unclear. The perpetrator has been arrested.
Rushdie became world famous when his novel “The Satanic Verses” came out in 1988. The following year, Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa against him and a reward for whoever killed Rushdie.
