Authorities have appealed to people to stay away from the walrus, named Freya, but large numbers of people are still arriving.
People’s reckless behavior and disregard for the authorities’ recommendations can endanger life and health, says a representative of the Fisheries Administration Nadia Jdaini.
The authorities have observed several potentially dangerous situations at the swimming beach in Kadettangen, where the walrus has been staying: People have swum near the walrus and come to the water’s edge to photograph it, even with children.
According to him, the authorities are now investigating other options, one of which is killing the walrus.
Walruses can sleep up to 20 hours a day. According to Jdain, Freya’s health has clearly declined. It is not getting enough rest and experts suspect it is stressed.
Walruses do not normally attack humans, but may do so if they feel threatened.
