Turkey has demanded that Sweden hand over several persons and threatened that it will slow down the progress of Sweden’s NATO application if Sweden does not agree to the handovers.
The 35-year-old man was convicted by the Turkish Supreme Court in 2013 and 2016 for several crimes, including misuse of bank and credit cards. His combined sentence is more than 14 years and he is required to be extradited based on the sentence. The man denies his guilt.
So the man to be handed over does not belong to the president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the “terrorists” on the extradition list, but the man has been asked to be extradited for fraud crimes.
In its decision on July 25, the Swedish Supreme Court considered that there are no obstacles to the man’s extradition.
– This is a normal routine matter. The person in question is a citizen of Turkey and has been convicted of fraud, the Swedish Minister of the Interior and Justice Morgan Johansson commented to SVT.
It is the first time that Sweden makes a decision to extradite a Turkish citizen after the start of the NATO process.
Lawyer Camilla Wester, who before the Supreme Court’s decision represented the man, is no longer involved with the case.
– I think it is sad and unreasonable that he is handed over, said Wester to the newspaper.
