The torpedoing of the contract which was to lead Naval Group to deliver 12 submarines to Australia created a real shock wave in France. As if this humiliation had served as a revealer, and caused an awareness of the loss of influence of our country. However, this is not the first setback of this type. Between an America now obsessed with the Chinese threat and which is turning away from Europe, and a China which hides its expansionist aims less and less, the Australian sequence seems to definitively bury the illusion of a “third way”. If it wants to continue to weigh, France has no other choice but to draw lessons from it, by giving substance to the concept of strategic autonomy. Are its European partners ready to take the plunge?
