Police blotter: Brant OPP go high-tech to nab suspended driver

Tractor driver killed in Norfolk rollover

Brant OPP used a license plate scanning tool to nab a suspended driver on Friday.

Officers were on patrol and in a cruiser equipped with an automated license plate recognition device. The device uses infra-red illumination to capture the image of both the front and back of a vehicle. It is capable of scanning thousands of license plates per hour, checking them in real time with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) database.

The system is capable of identifying stolen and expired license plates as well as those connected to suspended and unlicensed drivers, those wanted by police or connected to Amber Alerts.

At about 8:36 pm Friday, (Aug. 5) the system alerted Brant OPP officers to a vehicle on Powerline Road near Cleaver Road in Paris. The officers stopped the vehicle and subsequently charged a 32-year-old Waterloo resident with driving while suspended and failing to have an insurance card.
