The football party in Luleå has turned into a nightmare.

20 young people have been taken to hospital with acute food poisoning.

– Children have been lying on football pitches exhausted after vomiting so much, cup manager Tobias Skogsberg tells P4 Norrbotten.

Gammelstads IF’s football cup had barely started before the chaos began.

When one of the teams warmed up on Friday night, the first alarm came about food poisoning.

Then there were more.

Outside the school where the football youngsters live, the ambulances were queuing up, according to the report Norrbottenskuriren.

Those who fared the worst have been taken to the emergency department, according to health care manager Niklas Eriksson.

– At the moment, we have sent about fifteen to the hospital with vomiting and diarrhoea, he tells the newspaper.

Huddled together with buckets

When the Norrbottenskuriren was outside the school, the cleaning work was in full swing and young soccer players were huddled in the yard with buckets.

About 20 must have been taken to hospital, according to Region Norrbotten, which put Sunderby hospital and Piteå hospital in temporary reinforcement mode.

Several of the children reportedly had to stay in hospital overnight.

– It is regrettable and we can only apologize. This just can’t happen, says Tobias Skogsberg, chairman of Gammelstads IF and competition manager for the cup to Norrbottenskuriren

The explanation for the outbreaks is linked to a dinner served by the cup organizer.

– It is likely that everything started with us serving food from a catering company, says Tobias Skogsberg.
