A deep and wide sinkhole has appeared at the Candelaria copper and gold mine in northern Chile. Pictures from Reuters and AFP show a huge hole opening up in the ground.
– We have no idea what caused the material to fall in, says Karina Briño, administrative director of the mine, which is operated by the Swedish-Canadian company Lundin Mining.
The sinkhole was discovered last Saturday and is said to be 200 meters deep. Authorities are now investigating the cause, and Chile’s National Geology and Mining Authority has sent specialists to the area, reports BBC.
