Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, several Putin-critical newspapers and television channels have been shut down in Russia. Several independent journalists have now left the country and instead moved to Berlin, where they try to continue with their independent journalism.
– There were rumors that they were thinking of closing the border and that scared the hell out of us. For those prospects…we were very afraid of getting stuck in Russia, says Russian journalist Karen Shainyan.
Masha Mayers and Maksim Kurnikov ran an independent radio station in Russia before the war broke out. After that, the Russian authorities shut down the channel.
– They have killed all independent media in our country, says Masha Mayers.
