Don’t leave pets in vehicles: OPP

Norfolk OPP is reminding residents to never leave pets unattended in a vehicle.

“If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them,” Const. Ed Sanchuk, of Norfolk OPP, said Tuesday.

On a day when the temperature is 26 C, the temperature inside a vehicle parked in the shade reaches 32 C. If the vehicle is left in the sun, the temperature inside can reach 71 C, Sanchuk said.

“This is extremely hot and can be devastating to pets,” Sanchuk said.

Dogs and cats pant to cool themselves but this doesn’t work when they are surrounded by heat. On hot summer days, the air and upholstery in a vehicle can heat up to high temperatures making it impossible for pets to cool themselves.

Pets would be more comfortable left at home, Sanchuk said.

Sanchuk reminded residents that pets are dependent on their owners for proper care including food, shelter and water.

Those who mistreat animals can be charged with causing unnecessary suffering and injure or endanger an animal with the mistreatment of animals. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in jail upon conviction.

As well, those who mistreat animals can also be charged with neglect, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail.

Anyone who leaves an animal unattended in a motor vehicle faces a find of up to $490 under Norfolk County’s care and control of animals by law, Sanchuk said.
