[EN VIDÉO] Volcanic eruptions: drones offer us an unprecedented spectacle Volcanologists and engineers from the universities of Cambridge and Bristol used drones to film and carry out unprecedented surveys during the eruptions of two volcanoes in Guatemala whose peaks are inaccessible. A first that should greatly help research into the causes of these phenomena.
In our time when the snapshot is king, an image dating from a few months ago is certainly old… But when this one has this something incredible, breathtaking, what a great idea to keep it in hot (no pun intended), only to bring it out later, when the flood of images of the eruption has passed… That’s what Bjorn Steinbekk with this video of the Geldingadalur volcano.
A volcanic geyser!
Whether in volcanology or for picture lovers, the appearance of the drone was a real revolution! Indeed, they allow to see the eruption from above, as in these images, even if the absence of landmarks still requires a little explanation to understand what we see…
The drone is here above the cone eruptive, about 60 meters high, which formed during the eruption from March 19 to September 19, 2022. The crater it contains, and which this close-up view shows in full, is about 80 meters in diameter .
From May 2, the supply of magma by the volcanic chimney, which is precisely under this eruptive cone, has become discontinuous: phases of activity followed periods of calm of a few minutes, a bit like a geyser. During the latter, the immobility of the lava of the small pond contained in the crater allowed the formation of a thin solidified skin on the surface, color gray, shiny, witness to the formation of a volcanic glass by an almost instantaneous cooling.
Then, the rise of large bubbles of gas by the volcanic chimney pushed the magma upwards, forming a sort of bulge in the center of the lava pool. the debit at the level of the outlet of the eruptive cone, at the bottom of the image, then increased. Finally, after a few seconds, the gas bubbles pierced the surface and formed bubbling which gained in intensity to finally form real jets, which are called lava fountains. They lasted a few minutes, until the activity stopped and a new period of calm began…
Another video, on the tweet above, showing the same sequence seen from the side. We notice perfectly the fountains of lava which intensifies and whose fragments come to fall partly on the sides of the cone…
When is the next eruption? the next eruption? Soon ?
Spectacular: the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano filmed by a drone
Incredible drone video footage shot up close to Iceland’s small volcano Mount Fagradalsfjall is circulating the web. Here is the most impressive of the moment.
Article of Louis Nephewpublished on March 22, 2021
Flirting up close with an erupting volcano is not a good idea, except when this risk-taking is carried out by a drone. A flight without a net above the lava flows of Fagradalsfjall, not far from the capital Reykjavik, is what the Icelandic videographer was able to achieve Bjorn Steinbekk. These are undoubtedly the most breathtaking images circulating on the social networks. Following the lava flows very close to the ground, the drone climbs up the mountain and passes through the lava projections above the crater. A majestic and disturbing journey – especially for the drone – punctuated by nice slow motion. The author of the video does not explain with what aircraft he made his filming, but it is probably a device of the brand DJI. Given its trajectories, it appears to have been piloted from a FPV headset.

He wakes up after 800 years of hiatus
Since Saturday public access to this area volcanic is authorized provided you do not get too close to the lava flows and taking care of the fumes of carbon dioxide sulfur and gas. With this access to the public, spectacular shots and images are broadcast in mass via social networks. This is the first time in 800 years that this volcano has awakened. It would have already expelled 300,000 cubic meters of lava. According to volcanologistsyou have to take advantage of it, because the eruption of this small volcano should not last long.
