Almost 10 years ago, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) first went hunting for criminals in the series Arrow. This ended long ago, but their children and grandchildren lived on, above all The Flash, the most successful series of the so-called Arrowverse. This The DC universe has long overtaken the ailing blockbusters. But soon the Arrowverse will end.
The Flash ends with the 9th season
The US broadcaster The CW announced yesterday that The Flash will end with the 9th season. Here’s what’s certain (via THR and Deadline):
Grant Gustin (Barry Allen), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen) and Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) are back. Jesse L. Martin (Joe West) will have a smaller role due to another commitment, but will appear in at least five episodes.
The series was supposed to end after season 8, but the stars were persuaded to do another round.
This also ends the most successful DC universe
The Flash began as an Arrow spin-off in 2014, but surpassed the main series in ratings and went on to become the DC Universe flagship show on The CW. While the post-Man of Steel DC Extended Universe theatrical films struggled to create a coherent universe, the Arrowverse grew effortlessly. A total of six television series were produced, more or less connected:
The Arrowverse followed the example of large comic stories and told Cross-series crossover. The highlight of this was the Crisis on Infinite Earths event in the 2019/20 TV season, which connected five series. Numerous stars of past DC series and films stopped by, including Tom Welling (Smallville), Ezra Miller (Justice League) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns).
Of these five series, only The Flash is now left. Although Superman & Lois has started in the meantime, it was made clear in its second season that it takes place in a different universe than the Arrowverse series.
Fans pay tribute to the performance
Fans on Twitter reacted sadly but braced to the end of The Flash, it didn’t come as a surprise after all.
Thanks for playing the Flash, Grant Gustin. It will always be her definitive The Flash performance be.

When will The Flash end?
Production on the new season begins in September. The CW will then air the final episodes in midseason 2023. A start in February is conceivable, so the series finale would run in June, shortly before the theatrical release of the movie The Flash with Ezra Miller as Barry Allen. In Germany, the new episodes will probably appear promptly on Amazon.
