Indigenous Lidia Thorpe of the Greens finally had to read the oath of office in her usual form after the Speaker held out her tail.
An indigenous senator in Australia Lydia Thorpe has called Queen Elizabeth the conqueror in her oath of office. The Queen of Great Britain is also Australia’s head of state.
– I, Lidia Thorpe, declare that I am a loyal conqueror-queen to Elizabeth IIThorpe, representing the Greens, said with a fisted hand raised.
Speaker of the Senate Susan Lines pointed out to Thorpe that the oath of office must be read as written. Reprimands others also shouted (switch to another service)senators. After a short break, Thorpe read the oath of office in the prescribed form.
Under the Constitution, all Australian senators and MPs must swear allegiance to the Queen and her heirs and successors. The decree cannot be changed without a referendum.
Thorpe has previously criticized the conquest of Australia. Last month he said Australia was a colonial project and stated that the country’s flag did not represent him.
