The 41-year-old veteran has no plans to end his career. Aston Martin has announced that Alonso has signed for the team on a multi-year contract.
“The whole of Aston Martin is very excited to be able to bring Fernando’s experience and incredible speed to our team. Joining Fernando is a clear message from our organization that we are dedicated to building a winning Formula 1 team,” they write the website.
The Spaniard debuted in Formula 1 back in 2001. He left the sport at the end of the 2018 season but stayed with McLaren as an ambassador in 2019. In 2020 he was out of contract but returned to Alpine ahead of the 2021 season.
It was two seasons for the French team and now it is clear that it is Alonso who will be Sebastian Vettel’s replacement in Aston Martin from next season. Vettel is also a legend in the sport with four consecutive world championship titles between 2010 and 2013. The German will end his career as a Formula 1 driver after the season.
“No one in Formula 1 today can show a clearer vision and determination to win. That makes this an interesting opportunity for me,” Alonso said in a statement.
In Aston Martin, he gets Lance Stroll as a stablemate. Who replaces Alonso in Alpine is still unclear.
